These are some positive words that start with b. Today we look at belief and how our core beliefs help define who we are.
Belief is an acceptance that something exists or is true, particularly without evidence to support it.
Growing up believing: core beliefs
From a young age you slowly gain a set of core beliefs that act as the foundation for who you become. As certain events unfold in your life, you begin question, challenge or accept the beliefs passed onto you by those whose opinions matter most. This can range from your outward appearance to your religion.
Simply because you and I grew up in different places, spoke to different people and have different friends, our beliefs could be complete opposites.
This is what makes us fascinating, each conversation we have is unique, made up of life’s experiences that changes with each passing day.
I was brought up believing that I was different from the other kids. I was told to always ‘be your own king’. This helped me become independent, not relying on my parents for pocket money. Instead I started finding my own way to make money by either delivering newspapers or even cleaning at the local college where I studied.
While some core beliefs are actually very beneficial to our lives, sometimes we pick up a few along the way that shape us negatively. For example, imagine you were always told that you were always going to be a ‘nobody’, that you were never going to achieve anything in your life.
Those words could become a self-fulfilling prophecy where you begin to act out what you now believe regardless of whether it was true or not. Breaking free from a strong set of beliefs, particularly those that are negative, is no easy feat. The circus elephant is evidence of that.
The Circus Elephant
I was once told a story about circus elephant’s and how they are conditioned at a young age.
When an elephant is young, they are tied to a post stuck deep in the ground in order to stop them from escaping. As the baby elephant is quite small it doesn’t have the strength yet to break free. It quickly learns that the post is too strong to escape from, so it eventually gives up trying.
As the elephant gets older, it no longer tries to break free from the post. Despite the fact that it can walk off whenever it wants to. This is because it believes at a young age that the post is too strong to escape from so it stops trying.
Your are in some ways like the elephant which each belief acting as the post. You believe in these ideals because that is what you have learned to believe.
Your core beliefs
Take a minute now to think of your own core beliefs. Try and figure whether they are pushing you forward or holding you back in life. Assessing your own core beliefs is not easy, you have to deconstruct yourself, taking pieces apart to find out what makes you who you are.
When you have found your core beliefs, think about why you have these beliefs and where they came from. Try and dig deep here, don’t be afraid to question and challenge their origin.
Hopefully this article has given you a chance to identify and question your core beliefs. You may now begin to realise that the beliefs you have are based on influence and experience.
Keep an eye out in the future for a post on how to change your negative beliefs. Until then continue to question and try to gather evidence to support it. There is also a good worksheet from TherapistAid that you may wish to work through. If you can’t find a valid reason to maintain it, perhaps it’s not worth holding onto.
Here is an affirmation for you:
I will learn to challenge my negative beliefs in order to grow. I must strive to counter the negative by finding positive alternatives that make up who I am.
