Compassion defined
Compassion is defined as the powerful feeling of sympathy for another who has suffered from misfortune, it is followed by the desire to help or aid their pain.
Opposite of compassion
The opposite of compassion is heartlessness. This is the lack of feeling towards other people’s suffering.
The importance of compassion in life
Compassion is important. Without it, we are just in our own bubble, not providing help to those who need it. Compassion along with empathy, helps us to take care of each other and understand the struggle of others. It grants us the energy to help victims of misfortune, through charitable work, or just spending time with them talking them through their problems.
I believe we should demonstrate compassion when possible, although it is impossible to be compassionate all the time. With so many things going on in the world – we would never be able to keep up.
Compassion, just like belief’s start at a young age, and can both grow and fade as you become older and come across your own struggles. When I was younger, I was taught the importance of being compassionate towards other people, however that compassion never extended beyond my social circle. Whenever there was some sort of disaster in the world, I would just keep things moving, lacking any sort of care, because the events were not taking place where I lived.
However, if for example a close friend’s relative passed away, my hand would be on their shoulder comforting them and providing the best advice I could give. I have found that it is hard demonstrate compassion if you are not close to the sufferer.
Now that I’m older and have my own responsibilities, I am becoming more aware of problems outside of my circle because these ‘external problems’ are starting to creep into my social circle. As I am gaining the experience of life, I am starting to be more compassionate towards others I do not know. I see homeless men, women and even kids fill the streets asking for money to pay for a night in a hostel.
Grateful for my job, I return home to my warm bed every day, while others struggle to find a place to sleep for just the night. I witness mental illness first hand and see it again outside with old men and women. They talk to themselves in the streets, pacing up and down constantly or sitting outside shops feeling alone. How can I not feel any sympathy? When I have my own problems of rumination and the cost living is so high.
I’ve talked a lot about the importance of compassion, lets take a look at some examples. Have you been compassionate lately?
5 Examples of compassion
- Listening attentively to a friend whose relative has passed away and giving them your full attention, understanding yourself the feeling of loss.
- Putting others before yourself, by volunteering help to those who need it
- Loving someone unconditionally, no matter what they do, many parents experience this with their children
- Showing compassion by giving a hug, handshake or physical gesture to someone who needs the comfort
- Writing a letter, or sending a message to someone who may be feeling lonely, letting them know they were in your thoughts.
Closing
It is important to be compassionate in life. Not everyone has had the same opportunities you may have had, and we all come from different circumstances, each one with it’s own set of problems. Having pity is easy, but taking action and providing the loving arm around the shoulder, or listening to someones problems is harder. Try in life to do something when you are aware of someone else suffering. Not just shrug it off because it doesn’t affect you.
Try to be empathetic, especially if you have been in the same situation. And finally, learn to be compassionate towards yourself – praise yourself every now and then and be sympathetic to your own problems.
